ECS/EDI Processor - Import EDI Definitions

The ECS/EDI Processor is supplied with a database of Standard Message definitions but organisations such as the UN are constantly updating the message definitions to support new requirements. If the definitions for the Standard, message or version that you require are not supplied in the supplied standard database then they can be downloaded and imported to your database. You have the ability to import complete Standard versions or individual messages.

ECS/EDI Standards Import function supports the import of source files in UN/EDIFACT IBM EIF Format or UN/EDIFACT Text files.

IBM EIF Format

Updated EDI Message definitions are available to download from IBM, follow this link for a list of UN/EDIFACT Standards and versions available to download:

UN/EDIFACT EIF File Format

Click on the required Standard/Version to commence the download of the relevant ZIP file to the PC hosting the ECS/EDI Processor.

Step 2. Create Definition work folder

Before the downloaded EDI Definitions can be imported to the ECS/EDI Processor database the EIF file needs to be unzipped to a work folder:

Open the downloaded Zip file (for example "edi98b.zip") and unzip the EIF file within the ZIP file to a temporary work folder (ie. C:\TEMP\) the resulting file to import (for example "C:\TEMP\edi98b.eif")

Step 3. Import EDI Definitions

To Import EDI Message Definitions, perform the following:

Definition File Format determines what standard the definition source files have been stored in, select "UN/EDIFACT EIF File Format"

The value entered as the EDI Standard defines the ultimate standard name used within the ECS/EDI Database for the definitions successfully copied.

The value entered as the EDI Version defines the ultimate version used within the ECS/EDI Database for the definitions successfully copied.

The Source Folder should reference the EIF source file on the local PC containing the downloaded definitions following step 2  (for example "C:\TEMP\edi98b.eif") .

Individual message definitions and their related components can be imported by selecting an individual Message Id. This option should be set to "*ALL" of all Message Id's are required.

Click Import to commence the process. Status messages will be displayed in the bottom left section of the Panel.

Following the successful import of the required EDI Definitions the EIF Source File and downloaded Zip file can be deleted.

UN/EDIFACT Text Files

Step 1. Download EDI Definitions

Updated EDI Message definitions are available to download from the ECS Support website, follow this link for a list of Standards and versions available to download:

UN/EDIFACT Texr File Format

Click on the required Standard/Version to commence the download of the relevant ZIP file to the PC hosting the ECS/EDI Processor.

Step 2. Create Definition work folder

Before the downloaded EDI Definitions can be imported to the ECS/EDI Processor database the contents need to be unzipped to a working folder. Each of the EDI Standard/Version zip files (for example "EDIFACT_D97B.zip") contains a Folder (with the same name as the Zip file, for example "EDIFACT_D97B") which contains 5 sub folders containing the required data files.

Open the downloaded Zip file (for example "EDIFACT_D97B.zip") and copy the folder (for example "EDIFACT_D97B") and all its contents to a temporary work folder (ie. C:\TEMP\) the resulting folder to import (for example "C:\TEMP\EDIFACT_D97B\")

Step 3. Import EDI Definitions

To Import EDI Message Definitions, perform the following:

Definition File Format determines what standard the definition source files have been stored in, select "UN/EDIFACT Text File Format"

The value entered as the EDI Standard defines the ultimate standard name used within the ECS/EDI Database for the definitions successfully copied.
